How to create the perfect modern farmhouse kitchen
Modern farmhouse kitchens are a popular design style that combines elements of traditional farmhouse kitchens with more modern design elements. As a result, these kitchens often evoke a sense of warmth, comfort, and welcoming, as well as a connection to nature and the outdoors.
They typically have a warm, rustic, and homely feel and incorporate elements such as:
1. Turn to nature
Entering a farmhouse-style kitchen should feel like a step into the outdoors with natural materials such as wood, stone, and brick, taking centre-stage and contributing to the rustic, earthy look of the space. Fail-proof ways to incorporate these elements include wood beams, stone countertops, wood wrapped range hood, or wood-plank floors.
2. Shaker-style cabinets
A timeless classic, shaker-style cabinets are a perfect way to ground your farm-house aesthetic. Their simple and functional design can be elevated with exposed hinges, latches, dainty knobs, or cup pulls which add rustic, minimal touches.
3. Antique or vintage touches
To nail this look, your kitchen must give the impression that it has evolved gradually over time to include furniture and accessories that have been collected over the years.
Incorporate touches, such as antique furniture, vintage lighting, or distressed finishes on cabinets or countertops. Old farm tools or vintage appliances, will also add character and charm to the space.
4. Functional features
Modern farm-house kitchens are exceptionally practical.
Inspired by the functional, and traditional aspects of kitchens found in rural farmhouses, features such as a huge kitchen island, and a range hood make preparing meals in these spaces a delight! Furthermore, their large, deep kitchen sink makes cleaning up after cooking and gardening easy.
5. Warm, earthy colours
There are no hard-set rules for modern farmhouse colours. However, a winning palette that we’ve used in many spaces combines warm, earthy colours such as beige, brown, and red which contribute to the cosy, welcoming atmosphere of the space. For a dreamy look, choose a neutral colour scheme for the walls and countertops, contrast it with dark cabinets, then accent it with an island wrapped in walnut wood.
6. Mix and match finishes
If you’re inclined to eclectic decor, you’ll love these kitchens. Mixing and matching finishes and textures is a major part of the farm-house charm. Explore combinations such as mixing a painted cabinet with a wood island or combining a honed granite countertop with a glossy subway tile backsplash.
7. Use open shelving
A farmhouse style kitchen is incomplete without a shelf or plenty that are boldly stacked with your favourite pots and dishes. Using open shelving in place of traditional upper cabinets is a staple and makes the space feel more open and airy.
8. Accessorise with plants and flowers
With all the great touches from nature, don’t forget to add some foliage to your kitchen. Some plants and flowers in a clay vase, or a small planter of herbs by the window can all help to elevate your decor and tie the scheme together.
9. Exposed wood beams
Is there anyone who doesn’t swoon over wooden beams in a home? I absolutely love this feature of modern farm-house kitchens. The beams look dreamy and help you create a real heart of any home, where everyone will gather. Be sure to add them for a rustic, natural touch to your kitchen.
10. Natural light
Finally, we conclude our list with a feature that should not be overlooked. Natural light. An important element of farmhouse kitchens is their large windows that let in lots of natural light. With all the different materials and layers to the decor, it’s easy for the room to feel heavy. As such, good lighting is needed to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
We hope you will find your kitchen renovation fun and exciting. Don’t be afraid to push the boundary a little just as long as your final product feels stylish, welcoming and functional.
